Level 1 charges from a standard 120V outlet at 3–5 miles of range per hour; Level 2 uses a dedicated 240V circuit and delivers 20–40+ miles per hour — the home standard.
Is Level 1 ever enough?
For short commutes, sometimes — 10 hours overnight adds roughly 40 miles. The catch is everything else on that circuit: Level 1 runs for many hours at the outlet's full rating, which garage circuits shared with freezers and openers weren't planned for. If you're keeping the car more than a year or two, the dedicated Level 2 circuit is the version that stops being a daily compromise.
What does a Level 2 installation involve electrically?
A dedicated 240-volt circuit — typically 40 to 60 amps — from the panel to the parking spot, GFCI protection per the code cycle, and a load calculation confirming the service can carry it. Panel capacity is the fork in the road: with space and headroom it's a straightforward permitted circuit; without it, a load-management device or a service upgrade joins the project.
Hardwired charger or a 240V outlet?
Hardwiring is the durable answer for most driveways here: no plug to corrode, higher continuous ratings, and cleaner code compliance for outdoor locations. A NEMA 14-50 outlet keeps flexibility for portable chargers and future swaps but adds a GFCI-breaker requirement and a connection point that weather and daily cycling eventually attack.
