Definition
A breaker and wire run serving exactly one appliance or room — required by the NEC for ranges, dryers, water heaters, EV chargers, bathroom and laundry circuits, and more.
Why do some appliances need their own circuit?
Because their draw would starve everything sharing the wire. A dryer pulling 30 amps or a range pulling 40–50 amps needs a conductor and breaker sized for that load alone — sharing it invites nuisance trips at best and overheated wiring at worst. The National Electrical Code also mandates baseline circuits every home must have regardless of appliances: two 20-amp kitchen small-appliance circuits, a 20-amp laundry circuit, and a 20-amp bathroom circuit.
How do you know if your home is missing required circuits?
Symptoms first: the microwave and toaster can't run together, the bathroom heater dims the lights, or a window AC trips the bedroom circuit. Then the panel tells the story — a licensed circuit-by-circuit assessment maps what each breaker actually serves and compares it against what today's code requires. Older Puget Sound homes routinely run kitchens on one shared circuit that code has required two of since the 1960s.
What does adding a dedicated circuit involve?
A new breaker in the panel and a new wire run to the appliance location — typically a half-day of permitted work per circuit when panel space exists. When the panel is already full, that's the moment a sub-panel ($1,500–$3,500) or a panel upgrade enters the conversation, which is why circuit additions are best priced alongside a load calculation rather than one at a time.
