GFCI Outlets & Childproof Receptacles

GFCI outlets cut power in a fraction of a second when electricity leaks toward a person instead of its intended path — the difference between a tingle and an electrocution. Tamper-resistant (childproof) receptacles add built-in shutters that stop children from inserting objects into the slots.

What to know

  • GFCIs detect current leaking to ground and trip in milliseconds — required in kitchens, bathrooms, garages, laundry, exterior, and other wet or damp locations.
  • Tamper-resistant receptacles have internal shutters that only open for a proper plug — standard code for all living areas since 2008.
  • Many older Puget Sound homes have neither, especially in original kitchens, basements, and exterior outlets.
  • Test GFCIs monthly with the built-in button; a GFCI that won't reset is telling you something.

Where GFCI protection is required

Modern code requires GFCI protection anywhere water and electricity can meet: kitchen counters, bathrooms, garages, unfinished basements, crawlspaces, laundry areas, exterior receptacles, and near sinks. Older homes often predate all of it — a 1970s bathroom outlet has no idea your hands are wet.

Why childproof receptacles matter

Every year children are treated for burns and shocks from inserting keys, hairpins, and toys into outlets. Tamper-resistant receptacles use spring-loaded shutters that only open when both slots are pressed simultaneously by a plug — plastic outlet caps, by contrast, become a choking hazard the moment a child pries one off.

A quick, high-value upgrade

Swapping standard receptacles for GFCI and tamper-resistant devices is one of the fastest safety upgrades a licensed electrician can make. Eco can protect entire circuits from the panel with GFCI/dual-function breakers, or upgrade individual locations — and we verify wiring condition, grounding, and polarity at each device while we're there.

Common questions

My GFCI keeps tripping — is it bad?

A GFCI that trips repeatedly is usually detecting real current leakage — a failing appliance, moisture in a box, or a wiring fault. Don't bypass it; have the circuit inspected. Occasionally the device itself has worn out, which we confirm by testing.

Are outlet caps good enough for childproofing?

Caps help but they rely on adults replacing them every time, and removed caps are a choking hazard. Tamper-resistant receptacles build the protection into the outlet permanently and are what current code requires in homes.

Can one GFCI protect several outlets?

Yes — a GFCI receptacle or breaker can protect everything downstream on the circuit. That's often the most economical way to protect a kitchen or exterior run, and we label the protected outlets so you know where to reset.
