Allergy Reduction Starts With Your Home's Systems

If your allergies flare indoors, your home's systems are part of the story. Four things decide how much pollen, dust, and mold you breathe inside: the filter in your HVAC system, the condition of your ducts, how much fresh air your home exchanges, and your indoor humidity. No single gadget fixes all four. This guide walks through each system honestly, including what does not work, with Seattle's long pollen season in mind.

Why does Seattle's pollen season hit so hard?

The Puget Sound area has one of the earliest and longest pollen seasons in the country. Alder, birch, and cedar trees release heavy pollen from late winter into spring, often starting in February. Grass pollen takes over from May into July, and weeds carry late summer. That is roughly six months of outdoor allergens, and every door, window, and duct leak carries them inside. Does duct cleaning help with allergies?

Sometimes, and less often than the ads suggest. The EPA does not recommend routine duct cleaning as a general health measure, because dust that is stuck to duct walls mostly stays there. Cleaning earns its keep in specific cases: visible mold inside ducts, evidence of pests, construction debris, or ducts that were flooded. Outside those cases, your money does more for your allergies in a better filter.

What matters more than clean ducts is sealed ducts. Why does ventilation matter for allergies?

It sounds backwards to bring outdoor air in during pollen season, but sealed-up homes concentrate indoor allergens: dust mite debris, pet dander, mold spores, and cooking particles build up with nowhere to go. The goal is controlled ventilation, meaning air that enters through a filter instead of through open windows and random gaps. Exhaust fans push stale, moist air out of bathrooms and kitchens. Fresh air intakes and heat recovery ventilators bring outdoor air in through filtration, so you get dilution without the pollen load of an open window. What does humidity have to do with allergies?

Common questions

Will an air purifier alone fix my allergies?

No single device will. A good purifier removes particles from the air in the rooms it serves, but it cannot fix a leaky return duct, a damp crawlspace, or a clogged filter. Purifiers work best as the final layer on top of filtration, ventilation, and humidity control, not as a substitute for them.

What MERV rating should I use for allergies?

MERV 13 is the target for allergy sufferers, if your system can handle the airflow resistance. If it cannot, a media filter cabinet usually solves the problem. Do not simply jam the densest filter you can find into a one-inch slot; a starved blower creates its own problems.

Should I keep windows open or closed during pollen season?

Do houseplants clean the air?
