Heat pump water heater (HPWH)

Definition

A water heater that moves heat from surrounding air into the tank instead of generating it — using roughly a third of the electricity of a standard electric tank.

How does it cut water-heating cost by two-thirds?

Same physics as your refrigerator, run in reverse: a small compressor pulls heat out of the surrounding air and concentrates it into the tank, so most of the energy arrives free from the air rather than through the meter. Uniform Energy Factors above 3.0 — versus about 0.9 for a resistance tank — are why water heating drops from a top utility-bill line to a footnote.

What are the placement requirements?

Air to breathe and a drain for condensate. HPWHs want roughly 700+ cubic feet of air (an unfinished basement, garage, or louvered utility room), cool the space slightly as they run, and produce a refrigerator-like hum. Tight interior closets need ducting kits or a different location. They're taller than the tank they replace, so ceiling height gets measured before anything is ordered.

What do rebates do to the price?

This is the most-incentivized appliance in Washington right now: utility rebates plus the income-qualified federal HEAR program (up to $1,750 toward a HPWH for eligible households) can close most of the gap versus a standard electric tank. The honest math is after-rebate cost against the monthly saving — we run it line by line in a free estimate before you commit.

In the Puget Sound

Mild Puget Sound basements and garages rarely drop below the operating range HPWHs need, so the efficiency numbers on the box hold up here year-round better than in hard-freeze climates.
