Preparing Your Home for Windstorm Season

Windstorm season in the Puget Sound runs from October through February, and it takes down power somewhere in the region every single year. The homes that ride it out well share four things: a realistic backup power plan, whole-home surge protection at the panel, healthy trees kept clear of the service line, and a kit that covers three days without electricity. This guide walks through each one so you can get ready before the first big storm rolls in off the coast.

Why does windstorm season hit Puget Sound homes so hard?

Our storms arrive when the ground is already soaked. By late October the soil around Seattle, the Eastside, and Snohomish County has absorbed weeks of rain. Tall evergreens with shallow roots stand in soft ground, and then a front pushes through with gusts of 40 to 60 miles per hour. Trees and branches come down on overhead lines, and overhead lines are how most Puget Sound neighborhoods get their power.

Most outages last a few hours. The big events are different. After a major windstorm, crews work through thousands of separate damage points, and homes at the end of rural feeders can wait several days for restoration. NOAA issues high wind watches a day or two ahead for most of these systems, so you usually get some warning. The preparation below is what turns that warning into something useful.

Should you buy a generator or a battery for outages?

There is no single right answer, and anyone who tells you otherwise is selling one of the two. Here is the honest breakdown our team gives homeowners.

  • Portable generator. The cheapest way to keep a fridge and some lights running. It needs stored fuel, it must run outside and far from windows, and it cannot legally power your home's circuits without a transfer switch or interlock installed by an electrician. It is loud, and someone has to be home to start it.
  • Standby generator. A permanently installed unit that starts itself when the grid drops. Running on natural gas or propane, it can carry a whole house for days. It costs the most up front and needs permits and a proper installation, but for medical equipment, well pumps, or frequent outages it is the most dependable option.   • Home battery. Silent, clean, and instant. A battery switches over so fast most electronics never notice. The tradeoff is capacity: a typical battery covers essential circuits for a day or so, and a multi-day outage can outlast it unless it recharges from solar. Why do storms damage electronics even when the power stays on?

Windstorms produce a distinct grid pattern here: the flicker. Branches brush lines, breakers on the utility side trip and automatically reclose, and your house sees power drop and surge back several times in a row. The lights blink, everything reboots, and the storm moves on. Each of those events pushes a voltage spike through your panel, and repeated small spikes wear down the electronics in furnaces, heat pumps, refrigerators, and computers long before anything fails outright.

A whole-home surge protector mounts at the electrical panel and clamps those spikes before they reach your circuits. It protects everything at once, including hardwired equipment that can never plug into a power strip. What should you check on trees and your service mast?

Walk your property line in early fall and look up. Any branch overhanging the line from the pole to your house is a candidate to take your power out, and possibly to rip equipment off your wall on the way down.

The service mast is the metal pipe and weatherhead where the utility line attaches to your house. Ownership surprises people: the utility owns the wire, but the mast, the meter base, and the panel are typically yours. If a falling branch tears the mast off the siding, the utility will not reconnect until a licensed electrician repairs your equipment and it passes inspection. That repair queue gets very long in the week after a big storm, which is another reason to deal with hazardous limbs now.

Two safety rules that never bend: never trim branches near an energized line yourself, and never approach a downed line. Treat every wire on the ground as live, keep everyone at least 35 feet away, and call your utility.

What belongs in a three-day outage kit?

Plan for 72 hours without grid power. That covers the large majority of storm outages in our region.

  • One gallon of water per person per day, plus extra for pets.
  • Headlamps and lanterns with spare batteries. Skip candles; house fires spike during outages.
  • Charged battery banks for phones, and a car charger as backup.
  • A cooler and ice packs to buy your refrigerated food time.
  • Food that needs no cooking, plus a manual can opener.
  • Cash in small bills, since card readers go down with the power.
  • A week of prescription medications and copies of key documents.
  • Working carbon monoxide detectors with battery backup.

The carbon monoxide point deserves its own sentence. Every outage season, people are hospitalized because a generator, camp stove, or charcoal grill ran in a garage or too close to a window. Fuel-burning equipment stays outside, at least 20 feet from the house, no exceptions.

Common questions

How long do windstorm outages usually last around Puget Sound?

Most are restored within a few hours. After a major regional storm, expect one to three days, and longer at the edges of the grid. Utilities restore hospitals, then large feeders, then individual streets, so a single line down on your block can be near the end of the queue.

Can I plug a portable generator into a wall outlet to power my house?

No. That practice, called backfeeding, pushes power out through your panel into the utility lines and can electrocute the line workers trying to restore your neighborhood. It is illegal and it bypasses every safety device in your home. The safe route is a transfer switch or interlock installed by a licensed electrician.

Do whole-home surge protectors actually work?

Yes, for the events that matter here. They clamp the switching surges and reclosing spikes that storms produce by the dozen. No device guarantees protection from a direct lightning strike, but direct strikes are rare in Western Washington. When should I prepare, and when is it too late?

Surge protection and tree work can happen any time, and early fall is ideal. Standby generators and batteries involve permits, equipment lead times, and scheduling, so start that conversation in summer or early fall. Once a named storm is inbound, all you can realistically do is charge devices, fill the kit gaps, and park the car away from the big trees.
